My autobiography

I was born in the Avalon Park neighborhood of Chicago in 1965. During that time, the neighborhood was beginning to change. The neighborhood was first populated by Germans and Swedes in the 1880s. And for the next 80 years, it was predominantly white. But African-Americans began moving in the neighborhood in the early to mid-1960s. Chicago, one of the nation's most segregated cities, was experiencing white flight throughout the city, a phenomenon which was encouraged by unscrupulous real estate agents who engaged in panic peddling among white families. This happened in Avalon Park as well, which was well-documented by this 1963 article in a real estate journal, "How Marynook Meets the Negro", which looked at how a relatively new community in Avalon Park called "Marynook" addressed integration. Despite the best intentions of many, white families in Avalon Park were almost non-existent by 1980. But the neighborhood is still a middle class community, with 65 percent of its African-American residents employed in white collar jobs, a much higher number than when the neighborhood was all white. The neighborhood also maintains some of its wonderful landmark attractions, from the beautiful Avalon-Regal Theatre, designed by noted theater architect John Eberson in 1927; to the imposing Chicago Vocational High School, a mammoth institution built in 1940, with a still-extant airplane hangar; and the hundreds of handsome bungalows built in the 1920s.

My five favorite websites

I have always been a big proponent of websites with strong interactive functions. One website that is a favorite is the New York Times, which has been in the forefront for multimedia presenations for the past 15 years. One of the best examples of the New York Times' great work with multimedia is its presentation, "The 1619 Project." I also appreciate the work done at ESPN.com, which offers up interesting investigative pieces in addition to highlights.

My five favorite websites

 I enjoy robust multimedia experiences on a number of different websites. My five favorite sites are difficult to pick, but I do have five, which I'll list below.

My first choice is ESPN, which is the digital version of the TV network. I appreciate ESPN because of its ability to utilize multiple forms of media.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker has confirmed that federal agents will be coming to Chicago this week, as part of the federal immigration crackdown on migrants, according to a report from NBC 5 Chicago.

Pritzker said that he received the call from Trump today.

My five favorite websites for multimedia

I have always appreciated rich multimedia online. And I throughly enjoy viewing mulitple sites for their video, graphics and photos. There are some sites that are better than others. For instance, one of the best websites that incorporates multimedia is the Pulitzer Prize winning "The 1619 Project" from the New York Times, which covers the history of African-Americans in the United States, going back to the first slaves which arrived in this country in 1619. I also loved the Vanity Fair presentation which looked back at the 2020 unrest which occured through the world after the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. This presentation, called "We Are All George Floyd Now", beautifully utilizes gifs, video, photos and first person accounts of that time five years ago to show how this incident was a major flashpoint in American history. Another favorite multimedia-rich website that I enjoy is Cartoon Research, which delves into the Golden Age animation. One of my favorite sites for sports multimedia is ESPN. As you would expect, this site is not only rich with statistics and well-written essays, but also multimedia, include game-day hightlights, interviews and panel discussion. Another favorite site that features extensive multimedia is CNN. This news site offers CNN reporting as seen on television. And it also offers original digital-based reporting online. e
